Choosing a baby monitor without a subscription

A monitor does not have to mean a monthly plan. If you prefer a simple setup, it helps to decide where the video goes, what you are paying for, and whether devices you already own could do the job.

Start with the connection

Some monitor systems send video through a vendor’s cloud service. Others are built to work locally between devices on your home Wi-Fi. A local setup can be a good fit when you mainly want to check the room from elsewhere in the home and want to minimise where footage travels.

Questions worth asking

Will live view work without an ongoing storage or access plan?
Does the system require an account, and what information does it keep?
Where is video processed and transmitted?
Can I use an existing iPhone or iPad rather than buy a dedicated camera?
Can the setup also support bedtime routines instead of being a single-purpose gadget?

Keep the total cost in view

Compare more than the up-front price. Include subscription fees, cloud storage, replacement hardware, and whether you already have a suitable spare device. A local-first app can make a useful monitor from technology that is otherwise unused.
